Project of the Month - A Kitchen for a New Generation
January 13, 2012 at 10:42 AM

A new kitchen for a new generation. This was the dream for the homeowners and their 1920’s era craftsman home where they have raised two boys and where she grew up. The husband, also the family chef, was frustrated with the function of the dated appliances, and Gina wanted to find a way to open up the space to the rest of the house.
To start, a major structural wall was removed and replaced by 2 beams and cherry wrapped support columns. A large island, that also functions as a place for casual dining, takes center stage in the room. A bank of taller cabinets at its end creates a visual separation as well as a place to hang out and talk to the cook without getting in the way.
The kitchen’s soft, transitional feel was accomplished with the use of cherry wood cabinets with shaker doors and leathered granite countertops. Gray glass tile gives the room a serene feel, and large drum shades add an elegant touch to the space which is now open to the rest of the first floor.
