Kitchen IQ: How to Know When Your Space Needs a Makeover
March 07, 2011 at 12:02 PM
This time of year, you can feel it -- Spring, just around the corner. And, with that feeling of fresh air and sunshine often comes a desire to start cleaning and reorganizing our homes. However, sometimes cleaning can only accomplish so much, and our homes are in need of a bit more work to make them feel fresh, especially in heavy working areas such as the kitchen.
When does a kitchen really need a makeover? Here are some things to consider:
1. Is the space functional? Have your kitchen countertops turned into homework central with papers scattered everywhere leaving little space for their original purpose? When a space becomes so disorganized that functionality has gone out the window, it’s time for a makeover.
Start by evaluating the extent of the damage. Is this simply a job of reorganizing within the space, or do you need to consider a redesign to make it work?
If you just need to reorganize, take a deep breath and commit to making the time to do it. Start by defining the space. Decide what should really be there and what shouldn’t. Remove what shouldn’t as well as any duplicate items. Find a new home in the basement or garage for rarely used appliances. Relocate items so less time is spent moving from one end of the kitchen to the other. Be sure to explore all the new storage solutions out there to help keep you organized.
If your evaluation of the space in your kitchen tells you that even with reorganizing you will still come up short, then maybe it’s time to consider a full remodel. A redesign can help by adding more cabinet space, an efficient layout and allow for the addition of cool new storage cabinet accessories.
2. Which decade does your kitchen best portray? Let’s be honest, whether we want to admit it or not, we typically know when a space has exceeded it’s time stamp. If that’s the case, acknowledge it, but realize it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to make a few simple changes that can update your space.
Start by creating a budget. That way you will know if you are looking at a new paint job and some accessory changes or if cabinetry, appliances and a redesign are a possibility.
Next, determine a style for the space that conforms not only to this decade but also to your personal style. Not sure what that is? Invest in some current shelter magazines for assistance. There is plenty of free online help as well. One of my favorite sites is houzz.com where you can search by style, space or location. The site has thousands of photos to browse which can help you unearth your style.
3. Are there too many repairs to count? Sometimes a space can’t even be used properly because there are so many repairs that proper function is impossible. If you don’t have a “handy” man at home, it’s probably time to call in the professionals. It’s usually a good idea to stay local and ask around for referrals. Using local businesses helps your community to thrive, and getting referrals is just smart. Angie’s List is a great place to get unbiased consumer reviews on local service companies. Maintaining your home properly and protecting your investment is not only smart but will be necessary if you ever need to sell.
4. Does the space fit with your current family needs? New baby in the house? Kids all headed to college and the nest is empty? The way you use your space every day should determine its optimal layout. A new kitchen may be just what you need to bring your space up to date for your current situation. Again, start with a budget and call in the experts. Kitchen design is very specialized and complex. Working with a professional kitchen designer can ensure you end up with a well-planned and -executed kitchen design.
